Arta bridge

Arta bridge

Italian version 🇮🇹 Here

Arta city of southern Epirus in Greece, is a town that contains historical monuments from all eras: Byzantine churches, a beautiful medieval castle still well maintained, sections of ancient walls.

The Arta bridge connects the two sides of the Arachtos river and is one of the best preserved monuments in the city of Arta. The exact date of construction remains uncertain and there are several versions. Some legends attribute its construction to the times of the ancient Romans, others trace its construction back to the third century BC, under the reign of King Pyrrhus.

The Arta bridge is one of the most famous attractions in the region, although it is easy to find other similar constructions in the region. However, that of Arta is the only bridge to which the sad legend associated with its construction is associated and in Greece everyone knows its history.

It is said that the master builder saw the bridge collapse continuously until a bird with a human voice informed him that in order for the bridge to remain standing, he had to sacrifice his own wife. His wife was killed and thrown into the foundation and the building no longer collapsed. The screams of the woman, it seems that can still be heard from the bottom of the pylons.

On the left bank of the Arachthos River, just a few meters from the legendary Arta Bridge, there is the Platano di Arta or Platano di Ali Pasha. One of the oldest and most majestic in all of Greece, declared a protected natural monument in 1976.
