Sibenik – Tranquility in the heart of Croatia

Sibenik

Along the coasts of the Adriatic Sea, a pleasant refuge in the heart of Croatia to dive quietly into the local history of this land.

Italian version 🇮🇹 Here

Capital of the Sibenik and Tenin Region, the origins of Sibenik are not very ancient and could date back to around the year one thousand. The city suffered the long Venetian domination which lasted from 1116 to 1797. The Ottomans did not disdain the town which over the years suffered repeated attacks as evidenced by the numerous fortresses in the area.

From the dominion of the Serenissima to that of the Habsburgs, from the kingdom of Yugoslavia to present day Croatia, Sibenik is a region suitable for being visited in all seasons.

Also known as the Stone Town, Sibenik surrounded by three of the 8 national reserves, it contains many churches and fortifications. Currently not all churches are places of worship, many of them have been transformed into museums and galleries.

The most famous monument of Sibenik was built with the famous Brac stone and without any binding material: the Cathedral of St. James.

Unique in its Gothic and Renaissance style, the Cathedral of St. James is the most important religious building in all of Croatia.

Erected between the XV and XVI the works were initially entrusted to Giorgio Orsini and his are the 74 small human heads of the cornices outside the church. At his death the Tuscan master Niccolò di Giovanni Fiorentino finished the work.

The city of Sibenik was protected by four fortifications, among these the fortress of San Nicolò is the most important and the only one erected on the sea. Built on the remains of the Benedictine monastery, the fortress is characterized by its triangular shape making it one of the most precious and best preserved examples of Renaissance military architecture in Dalmatia.

For their exceptional cultural and artistic value, the two buildings have been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Sibenik will captivate you with the narrow streets of the old town, the countless historical monuments of Venetian rule, the spectacular beaches and the fantastic landscapes of the Kornati archipelago.
