Cathedral of St. Michael the Archangel Belgrade

Cathedral of St. Michael the Archangel

Italian version 🇮🇹 Here

The Cathedral of St. Michael the Archangel is an orthodox cult building located in the Kosančićev Venac district, in the old part of the city of Belgrade, the capital of Serbia.

Rich in history, art and culture, belonging to the former Yugoslavia, Belgrade plays a very important role for Serbia. Situated between two important rivers, the Sava and the Danube, the city stands right where the Balkan territories join Pannonia. The Kalemegdan Fortress defends the city from the top of the hill built right at the point where the Danube and Sava rivers meet. Inside the walls, today, there is a large park and numerous tennis courts.

The Cathedral of St. Michael the Archangel is a patriarchal church with particular spiritual and historical relevance: inside there are some important relics of Serbian saints, such as those of Tsar Stefano Dečanski.

Built between 1837 and 1840 on the site of an older church from 1728, its beauty is amazing, with extraordinary Baroque architecture and remarkable pictorial works. Its interior is lavishly decorated and in addition to the cathedral treasury also houses a collection of ancient coins and gold artefacts dating back to the 17th – 20th century.

Outside, the cathedral of San Michele Arcangelo is surrounded on all four sides by a small park.
