PIXEL PHOTO MAGAZINE – February 2024

Printed Photos

Some time ago, while rummaging through the drawers in search of an old pencil case, I found some photo albums in my hands. They were a couple of albums of the kind that were given as gifts when one took the roll of film to be developed and in which they immediately carefully arranged the photos to avoid fingerprints remaining on the glossy prints.

Slowly one after the other, we leaf through memories, we hear their voices, their smiles, the emotions stolen from the passing time. You also remember the words said in that moment stolen and fixed there in your hands.

MEMORIES

They are photos that do not have a material value but an immeasurable emotional value. Leafing through them, vivid memories of twenty, thirty, forty years ago come back and we are enveloped and enraptured.

THE PRESENT

Then looking around we realize that today the only printed photos, if lucky, are the framed ones on the shelves that date back to a few years ago. The desire to make our memories alive and tangible has been lost. We take thousands of photos and have filled dozens of hard drives, also making our memories virtual, losing the value and warmth of a memory.

It’s as if we no longer had the concreteness of the past. We run after the millions of pixels and super-definite photos that we will see on a 52-inch screen only when turned on. But all the technology we can use, once turned off, vanishes and in our hands all that remains is the void of an album that we will not be able to browse.
